Well, he doesn't know that. Even though he most likely has the intent to let her die if she encountered danger, he isn't aware that he actually did that in a past life. But he DID abandon her to protect Gabrielle each and every time that monster attacked them in the garden.
I think he does remember he even said "she's died seven times before and another time won't hurt" in the very beginning
