    i get that it's all fictional and everything but seriously, i can't even count how many times i've read this be used an excuse to kiss someone in manga/anime/drama. i'm quite curious if in those countries (e.g. japan), people actually think it's a thing in the west xD

    Perhaps in 1946 people in Japan might have been taken in by "It's just an American greeting", but since Japan is heavily influenced by the US and Europe since then, most Japanese people know that a kiss on the mouth is not a customary greeting for Americans. It is an obvious excuse to kiss a love interest in manga/anime/dramas. The Japanese readers know it as well as we do. This is why it is as funny to them as it is to us.
