That demon even called Rood his "brethren"... and Rood is also considered to be the "King" of the demons... So does that mean Rood is the incarnation of "God" that came to the humans when the human Rood died and he took his form and is not trying to find out why all of this is happening?? Σ(っ°Д °;)っ EXTREME CONFUSION!!! Σ(っ°Д °;)っ

What! human rood die. I think it is a bit unbelievable, when you think that the actual rood is the demons "king" .(No excuse me) to think that a demon have such a personality is Σ(っ°Д °;)っ but i would like to know if the human rood was till alive what kind of personality would he have #-.-)

Actually, my conclusion is this. After what we've seen in the manga, i think that we can safely say that Rood was one of the children sent into the portal. And as you know, all mana originates from the demon king which is why the tower imprisoned him. So when Rood enters the portal, perhaps the king found him special or something. And knowing that he was going to meet his end soon, he transfers all his powers to Rood including authority over the demons. Which is why Dio could tell that Rood was the king. And also the reason why that female horned demon(forgot her name) thinks that Rood isn't the king. Because the original king was supposed to recognise her.

    interesting theory.

Since everybody is reaching a conclusion, I will also theorize. I quite agree with you in how the storyline goes.

Before, I state my theory, I would like to discuss about what makes a soul? there is no solid definition of what it is, but if I were to say, it would be a spiritual side/part to someone. I believe that this spirtiual side is the source of mana.

My theory is, we can assume that the original king's body is dead. An unusable corpse that is trap within the tower, however even hundreds of years later, the demon king's soul still remain on earth (probably in deep slumber) and has been
providing mana to human. However, his mana is limited and human started to fear the thought of there being no more mana.

In the story, Kiel (rood's brother) was working as a magician for the towers on a project/experiment known as "the ceremony" in hopes of founding a new king to replace the dead one.

This is where it gets confusing, according to the story, the tower created a special gate that allow people to go through it and look for the new king, then the magician would pull them back out of the gate. However, either the person never comes back or they come back as a skeleton.

And that is the exact same thing that happen to Rood. Rood was send down the portal as a child, assuming, he died and most likely no longer a human.

It seems that in the story, Rood had die before Kiel decided to sacrifice himself to the portal.

Nobody knows where that portal actually leads because no one has ever came back alive. Sure, they say that the gate lead them to a new king but there wasn't evidence this new demon king even existing. So when they say a new king, I think that it might mean a vessel for the (Currenty)dead king's soul (and his mana)

I think the portal lead to a different realm where the dead demon king's consciousness is trap within. I'm not completely sure what happens in that portal and how it happens, but maybe the demon king is looking for a new vassel, and he is looking for someone who is compatible to him but also who he could entrust. Maybe each time they send someone into the portal, the demon king would test them and if he finds them unworthy, he would kill them.

I think Rood is possbily the vassel that contains either the whole or a part of the last demon's king's soul.
However Rood still has his own conscious. That's why Dio recognize his smell but was unable to recognize him (as his previous master). That's why the giant eye ball say that Rood was what's left of it (the last demon's king) former glory. That's why Lispen(?) says that he change a lot.

Continuing on from my theory, I think when Rood was in the portal, he too was tested by the demon king (maybe even have spoken to the king), however, Rood wasn't strong enough to overcome the demon king's test until he hear Kiel (when he sacrifice himself) voice or something along the line, which give Rood the courage to stand up again the demon king. Maybe because of that, the demon king found Rood interesting/special and decided to merge with him.

Mergin with demon king brought him back to life, however it meant that the king will forever be part of him.

Interesting theory you have there as well. However, not to offend you, I think you missed out an important detail of the story. It is true that people who were sent into the portal died, however, the story also stated that only children survived. And because the tower discovered that, they decided to send children under the age of ten into the portal. The only problem is that the children who went in, came out mentally traumatised. They lost their mind during their time in the portal, simply saying, they went mad. But Rood was the only exception I guess.

Here's the link, took me a while to find the page.

And based on this, is why I believe that Rood did not die in the demon world. And according to your theory, the reason as to why the king thought he was special may be true. To be honest, much of your theory actually makes sense and my theory may be incorrect. Based on the scenarios you brought up, the demon king may truly have merged with Rood because he was special or compatible. But I am certain that Rood hadn't lost his life and came back through the merging. He doesn't have memories of what happened in the portal but is able to use the king's power, I guess that says something.

No worry, I don't feel offended. the point of these chats is to let people know what you are thinking. Honestly, I forgot about that scene but thanks for kindly reminding me.
My theory might be wrong but my focus when I was explaining it, was the fact that he has somehow merge with the demon king. Also I feel that both of our theories are very similar. I just wanted to elaborate on how I felt about the story.

I don't think the fact that Rood die or not will affect much of the story, but the fact that the demon king is chain to his past. When Rood died or come close to his death, the king save him by merging/transferring his power to him. (power=mana, mana comes from the soul, so giving him his power meant giving him part/all of his soul henceforth I say the that they merge)

Also Just the fact that we saw his corpse (skeleton?) in the portal made me assume that he had die, either physically or spiritually.

I think my biggest question, was where that portal lead to and how a new demon king is created? Whatever happen in that portal made the demon king want (or maybe forces?) him to give/merge/share his power with Rood. Since I mention before, I think that (for this story at least) mana comes from the soul, so when he merge with the demon king (or maybe form a contract with him), he was given the authority to control the demons (much like you theorize that the demon king he transfers all his powers to Rood including authority over the demons).

I see what you mean.^^ Thank you very much for sharing your views. After seeing your link, I very much understand why you thought he died. But I think the reason why Kielnode had those thoughts was because he felt guilty at having seen Rood's note far too late. And because of that, Rood was able to be captured and went through what he did. So basically, the Rood in his arms was unconscious, not dead followed by the next scene after a few pages which shows his grown up self.

Thanks for sharing your as well! It's super interesting to hear what others have to say. Beside, you've been very graceful and practical throughout the whole conversation which I appreciate!

But your theory does make sense. By all means, I could see why you say that Rood is alive.

When I was rereading the flashback, I remember how emotional I felt when I read it the first time. The author did an amazing job conveying the regret and guilt Kielnode felt when he was unable to protect Rood. The fear and desperation of locating his brother, the emptiness when he couldn't find him and decided to sacrifice himself, and most importantly, the sad and heart wrenching scene of Kielnode looking at Rood's memory. I was crying my eyes out.
