Should Military Training be Mandatory??

I know that a lot of people believe that it's dumb to force military training but I had an argument with my sister a short while ago and was curious if anyone had the same opinion as me and how other's would view this situation.

I'm going to explain a short scenario below with my reasoning and follow up with my question.

So y'all know how in Korea it's mandatory for men to join the military for a while but I think that's a bit uncalled for. But imagine if a disaster occurred. Korean men would naturally have a better understanding of how to react and would be able to defend themselves since they already had training while in the military, but I was thinking perhaps there could be a year of mandatory military training (without having to actually be forced to join the military, I'm thinking of something more similar to self defense training.) for not just men, but everyone able bodied.

Logically, if a disaster occurred all able bodied men would be drafted anyway and following them would be women if circumstances get that bad, so I personally would like to have some knowledge on how to stay as close to safe as possible and protect myself and/or those I care about. What I'm wanting to know is how many of you would prefer the disbandment of military altogether (my sisters argument) or to have some form of military training that doesn't force you to join the military but still teaches you to defend yourself (my opinion.)? Or any other opinions as well of course.

Hmm.. I think it'll backfire in a way if a certain country suddenly made the military service as mandatory, other countries might as well think they are preparing for a war or colonize smth.. imagine the bigger country do that though you've also got a point but yeah

as of the moment my opinion in this is that it kinda violates the human rights??? since there is no freedom of choice and since not everyone is fitted for it because some people have mental illness or not physically not good.

I know you probably meant this in a good way, but this comes off as very ignorant in my opinion. There is a reason why military training is optional in America. Many people are already doing military training, and people who join gain the benefits and experience if they so choose. Education benefits, loans, bonuses, and health care are some examples of things included for people who are in the military. With that being said, I don’t think that the military should be mandatory like you said, here’s why:

The reason why South Korea (not “Korea”) has men required to train in the military from ages 18-28 is in short, for national security. We all know how North Korea and South Korea separated into two counties during the Korean War, ending in an armistice. So technically, South Korea and North Korea are still at war. With North Korea having a dictatorship government and bordering South Korea, there is a worry for a war to break out again, especially with the development of nuclear and atomic warfare. So long story short, South Korea requires mandatory military services for men if they ever go into war with North Korea again.

I can go on, but I think this should get my opinion across.

No, since life isn’t all about war and fighting. Instead of focusing more money and man power on war, we should be focusing more on peace efforts instead. There still should be an active military, however, it should not be mandatory. Like you said, it is a violation of freedom and a persons born natural rights. There are countries that do have active military requirements, but these countries are either war zones, or undeveloped.
