I got it the other way round. He needed Bertholt alive because otherwise he couldn't have saved Armin when the time came, so he sacrifices his mother (and coincidentally traumatised himself) in order to be able to save Armin later.
Wait did eren redirect Dina in order for her to eat his mum and not bertholt?so everything was planned out from the start?
