I already read this story years ago, but in fragments, so I was sad, but not teary when I read this again. However, when Adolph/WenShu started talking about how he hated dogs, prevented Lewis/ZhiShu from having one, and how its ironic how the dog is the only one kind to him now, I started to break down crying.
How twisted must you be to have something you hated irrationally be the only thing that sticks by you in the end?
The characters didn't charm me enough to be attached to them, but they are still memorable. But overall I'm more sad about the situation than sad for the characters.
