I this point no one really definitively know why Johannes chose Shuli. As for her life before coming to the Von Neuschwanstein there is a strong argument that her life would have been miserable. Shuli had a shit family and yes living in high society was also shit but in high society she had the power at least for the most part on her side while in her old life she had no power. Yes she suffered a miserable end but who is to say that she wouldn't have had something similar or worst in her old impoverished life. Thank goodness she was reborn with the memories of the past so now she will mostly likely live a happy life while wisely wielding her power to protect her and her new family.
Now here is my theory on Johannes. He knew he was dying and he was just looking for someone to take care of his family who would be selfless, honorable, intelligent and in need of a chance and he found Shuli. I personally don't think he choose her for her looks but it was coincidental that she looked like the former Queen.
Again that's my theory. I will judge Johannes when I have more information because despite everything it doesn't seem like Shuli resents him despite her dying.
And i think that's selfish, who was he to bring a girl from who knows where and put this obligation of becoming the marchioness at the tender age of 16?
Yea, we know that her life might've been miserable as readers but him, a maquess who had a decent head, surely could've chosen someone older. Even if she had caught his interest he should've known that since he was soon about to die placing that much of a huge burden on her will ruin her.
But what if he had looked for someone older and found no one. He knew that his time was running out for sure and that no only he had to find a trust worth person but train/teach/educate them within that time. Maybe he just couldn't afford anymore time to look. Or maybe he was a huge ass. At this point I'm just playing devils advocate because everything is still in the dark. ╮(￣▽￣)╭

Did that old marquess have any conscience? Why would the old af mfer marry our mc who is merely 16 years old and introduce her to this filthy high society when he fucking knew he was about to die? Was the man good in the head? Why doesn't anyone blame him? I really do not get how and just why he would do this. Our mc could've just been having a peaceful life and could've become an amazing entrepreneur if not for his stupid ass.
