Maybe they're just poor in rich terms. Like, " What!?! We only have a million left in our savings?!?" So it's enough for them to all live comfortably very easily, but not enough to keep their giant mansion, estate, and businesses running etc.
I think it's more of a 'whenever we have a money to spare we soend it' kinda situation.You basically have money for everything you want but when an emergency comes you find out there's not much left.
