Just a guess, but in 60 years before Suleiman reign it was legitimize for the reigning king to murder his brothers (other princes) to prevent possible treason. Having more than one son would mean seeing your blood-related sons killing each other.

I wish they would have shown the impact of Alexandra giving birth to more than one kid. It wasn't done. It was one woman one son, but she went against the norm and had more sons.
