First off, I hate when parents abandon their kids because the new love interest doesn't want kids or has no interest in dating people who already have kids via someone else. You don't choose a love interest OVER YOUR OWN CHILDREN!
Second, she should have made an effort to SEE HIM when he was still a kid! Then, when he was of legal age, she should have TRIED AGAIN, if her ex had continued to interfere up to that point. I mean, if I had been a kid abandoned by my mother, as a child, and then never heard word one from that mother, by the time I was old enough to "look for her" on my own, WHY would I? After that many years with no contact, I'd have assumed SHE was the one who didn't want to see ME.
