Every family in Japan has a family registry (koseki) that lists all the members in the family and each persons info. If someone is married, one partner moves their name into the other partners family registry and takes the surname. If they have a kid, their information is added—name, birth date, etc.
Adoption In Japan is pretty much putting someone’s name in your family registry, giving the adoptee your last name and legally recognizing them as kin.
Kinda a stupid question but I'm just curious, how does the adoption thing work in Japan? Does one partner adopt the other? Or do they adopt a child together? What exactly happens? Sorry if this is coming out wrong, just wanted to know! Thank you!
