She did let him go and he had to go alone. If she didn't stay and make a reason for them to believe he died they would hunt him down pretty quickly. I think she used some kind of illusion or someone else to feed the butterflies in front of her family. Anyway he's alive and well and no one is chasing after himthanks to her.
