According to the last chapter, the Emperor survives. Kara and her husband get Charlotte's title and wealth (like the Emperor wanted), and Charlotte and her husband are voluntarily semi-exiled VERY FAR away from the Capitol (the Duchy is actually the Duke's territory, but they're discouraged from coming back for the social season).

It's treated as a good thing (the scene was from Charlotte's POV and she was VERY happy), so I'm assuming there was a lot of Drama before they made peace with the Emperor. Kara, husband and kids are allowed to visit them, so they're not permanently cut off, and letters are obviously allowed, but Charlotte is So Done with non-relatives and her husband no longer has to play his half-brother's weapon of war.

So the Emperor gets everything he wanted (Charlotte's family wealth tied to his loyal knight, and his half-brother out of the way), but he loses the girl (Charlotte).

So who does Charlotte marry ┗( T﹏T )┛

Charlotte marries the Emperor's half-brother, the Duke (hence the duchy). The wizard? Redhead with green eyes? Whom his brother has been lowkey trying to kill by constantly sending him to war? Charlotte is the wizard's LANTERN, for crying out loud!!

Here's a bloody hint. The redhead who pulls Charlotte out of the river in the next chapter? Charlotte marries him.
