In her first life I'm pretty sure he forced her into a situation where she would have to kill him and ascend the throne. She was the last surviving member of her people and lived her life for him. So the betrayal was leaving her behind.
She started to get more famous and loved than him, the king, and even if he liked her, he swayed by his desires of power when he became king. He became like his older brother that he killed, and tried to kill her, leaving her with 2 solutions : either kill him to survive and free the people from another bad king, or die.
