This reminded me of a film my dad loved - it's called "Butterfly Effect".
It has the same premise - the MC's love interest died and so he tried to prevent it but every time he did, something bad happens. By the end, the MC decided to not cross paths with his love, even when he had the chance when they got older. It's a bittersweet ending.
I thought this'll end the same way, but I'm glad it didn't or else I would've bawled my eyes out.
