And the time travel theory did get confirmed. Mikasa asked the same question in chapter One.
Eren wakes up from a Very long dream, crying. He said, “I don’t know why I’m crying, but it feels like I’ve been dreaming for a long time.” Aka, he went back in time.

i’m almost pretty sure what mikasa saw was a vision eren projected(hence the headaches) of them running off together instead of eren choosing genocide a while back (ch123?? i believe)
eren asked mikasa “what am i to you?” in that chapter, and mikasa didn’t get to confess. so what eren showed her, was what would have happened if she did confess and they did leave together to live the rest of eren’s years peacefully.
which explains why he said he made historia “go through hell”. because he never chose the rumbling or the genocide. he just left, making her deal with everything in paradis.
although some people expressed they feel it doesn’t feel like something eren would do, well the way i see it; when eren asked mikasa that desperate question, he asked as almost a cry for help.
i saw a theory on reddit that said what mikasa saw was an alternative reality that eren saw and showed her.
what would’ve happened if she confessed??
eren’s tipping point was the question that was left unanswered. if she said yes, the vision she saw was the reality they would have lived.
eren could see the future, so he might’ve wanted to confirm which reality he was in. the one where he runs away with mikasa and lives peacefully. or the one where he leaves everyone and commits genocide.
and then he got his unanswered question, answered.
