I get that, but it didn't really seem like he couldn't trust people anymore until suddenly he said it when he decided to buy a slave.
People have already said this, but it's really similar to Shield Hero.
When the shield hero bought a slave he was A) suddenly summoned to a new world
(thus low level) , B) betrayed by someone he though he could trust, and C) had the entire kingdom turned against him. So his mistrust of everyone was established and made sense, so that motivation leading him to buy a slave made sense. Plus he wanted them in order to fight, the only reason he bought a loli girl was bc she was the only one he could afford (i think) and he forced her to fight. He was also super jaded so it made sense that he would resort to slavery to ensure his survival.
This guy doesn't have most of that. He was betrayed, and I agree that maybe he has trust issues. But he isn't weak nor is he scorned by anyone (except the hero's party). he also doesn't NEED a slave that can fight since he's level 300, which he acknowledges with the whole "i'll be safe wherever i go." All this seems to me is he's lonely so he wants to pay someone that won't leave him to stay with him... plus he chose a v. young girl (sure she looked pathetic, but he didn't even see the other slaves in the same room)
