Oh yeah, I also recommend reading the novel or the drama first. The donghua (animation) is a lot more compact and leaves some details out, it's also not finished.
The drama doesn't explicitly talk Wuxian's and Wanji's relationship, only leaving a hint. But~ the novel does! Including explicit scenes ;)
The drama is still really good though.
