I think her father gave her that sword to protect herself, then he sent Maximilian to help her get away in secret.
We all know they're plotting to take the King's throne, so maybe they wanted to fake her death (so her father wouldn't have any weaknesses anymore) and kill him.
Maybe they'd have killed her ex fiancée too.
You know, Max's expression at the end of the first chapter (when she kills herself) is too genuine, if he really wanted to extorce information and torture her he'd have been more composed.
Of course I'm just guessing, but everything would make sense this way.
(Btw I really fell for her father).
