I know it was acceptable in the past to marry younger girls, but 9 years old? if I read right.. and how he didn't know hes a boy. and after deciding to run away he should mention that fact.. this is a bit flawed.
Yeah, I was surprised by the kiss too. I mean it wasn't sexual, and rather cute, but that is a kid...like....a kiss on the cheek would suffice.
Also maybe the boy was raised to be a girl? IDK but he doesn't seem to care what gender he is lol.

I think the kiss was non-sexual, just like how parents kiss their babies on the lips and young children kiss their siblings... I don't think people do this much in the West, but it's a pretty common way of showing simple affection where I'm from. I've even seen people kiss their pets on the mouth, just a small peck. ^^;
