In stories like these, fathers are just bad at showing affection in front their daughters. He didn't intentionally neglect her. Communication is a two way street. She didn't reach out, ask about, or confront him about his behavior, so he had no idea just how much she misinterpreted his actions.

is it really necessary for the dad to act like that towards the fl? i mean i get that the emperor can end fl's life anytime; that's why he's scared, but he didn't have to neglect her and sht. he could have acted normally and cherished her idk and their lives would turn out for the better and there would be no misunderstandings. hmm maybe it's because he should not show any weaknesses because he is a knight? i still feel like it's unnecessary (don't bash me tho i didn't read the novel)
