The author is telling she doesn't not see any reason why they can't be happy. 'Their own way' : of course they will have to find their own way that is not the same as regular couple. Even in the fiction their union is already prohibitive: two men, one lord and one lowborn. So, they will have to make do with an unconventional way because they will never ever fit in that society as a couple.
