History has had successful concubines rise up to power. Cixi and Wu Zetian are famous (or some might argue, infamous) for achieving peak success and becoming the de facto ruler of China. They didn't get there by being kind and naive.

She doesn't marry the sultan, meaning she doesn't even become Queen. If this is true, it's extremely misleading since she's supposedly the Sultan's true love and all. I think that's where all the outrage is. We simply except rulers to be brave, strong, and cunning. They lead and become responsible for their people's lives after all. The life of a kind, simple girl like FL would be nice to read about if she were a normal person but it's honestly frustrating to see when she's the mother of a country.
