The crown Prince aka also her ex husband in the 1st timeline is the ML
Also yes he was (is?) an asshole to her but he had a “reason” for it. In the 1st timelime, he actually discovered that she wasn’t the real Veronica kinda early on just cause he absolutely hated the real Veronica. So he ended up really falling for Elena and was most worried about the real veronica going after her even Elena she wasnt aware of it herself. He started distancing himself from her especially when she got pregnant because it was the only way to protect her because the more attention and affection he gave the more power and leverage the Duke and other nobles would have over him and endanger both Elena and the baby’s life. He even secretly built a hiding place and worked tirelessly to strengthen the Palace all whilst under the guise of hating Elena (Which ik like relationship 101 is communication but at this time they were heavily monitored and weren’t in a position to threaten the duke or kill the real Veronica)
Just as it was safe enough for him to confess and explain everything, Elena left the palace after the final blow of him saying things he didn’t mean like their child would disgrace the empire. When the prince found her next, she was already dead in the hidden mansion and he cried hugging her dead body repeating how sorry he was he was late and failed to protect her and the baby.
When he returned to the palace, he took the baby from the real Veronica and told her he knew what happened and that she would never see him again.
I really hated him but honestly after reading all the spoilers not just that ^^ I can see how horrible that must have been: loving someone and knowing they’re essentially lying to you about everything (their identity, their motive...etc) and despite that still loving them and trying to protect them the best way you can only to lose them in the end without even conveying your true feelings is just ugh my heart ╥﹏╥
