The Prince/Emporer was in love with her. He wanted to protect her because he knew she was a fake and the only way he could do that was to be distant so the Duke wouldn't kill her. Then they lost control of their feelings and she got pregnant and the Prince knew that there would be a time limit on her life.
He told his child that his mother was the most beautiful and kind woman even if he didn't know her name, she was his love. It was heartbreaking.
In this timeliness, she tries not to fall, but the Prince has no interest in Cecilia and pursues her as Lucia/Elena.
