I think he did despite everything he still kept Penelope's portrait in his room and in the og story he accepted jeannete knowing she wasn't his own daughter (i think this is because he loved Penelope too much, instead of loving his own daughter (Athanasia) he loved Jeannete instead) friggin sad for Claud and Athanasia
Spoiler:
I would first like to clarify that what I've written may not be true and what I've read could be a theory to make the story more interesting. (I haven't read the novel either). Also, I read this forever ago so it's probably even more untrue.
So I read somewhere that Jeanette, in the og book/novel, dabbled with black magic to go back in time, or rather, reset the story. She did this cause Athy was framed for poisoning her and was killed by Claude, since he favoured Jeanette.
Later everyone found out that it wasn't Athy who tried to poison Jeanette, so depressed Jeanette felt sorry for Athy (of course Claude didn't care), turned back time, with her inherited black magic, and wished for Athy to be loved in this new life.
As a consequence, Jeanette would lose her memories and become poison for Claude (though I guess it was hidden by confusing Claude to think he was getting relief from being with Jeanette, despite her damaging his body).
It was also said that in the og novel, Diana and Claude disliked each other. I think Diana had a Athy with Claude and named her Athanasia (usually only named if heir to the throne) as a way to mock Claude, as he can't become Emperor, of course due to Anastacius already being heir to the throne.
Basically, Jeanette using black magic to reset the story and wishing for Athy to having a loving family, caused Claude's fake memories of love with Diana.
Also, the reason why Claude died in the past was cause he stayed too long with Jeanette even when he found out that she was doing harm to his body. Uhhh, he loved her too much.
Btw, Jeanette and Ijekiel were happily together, until Ijikiel saw Athy ლ(´ڡ`ლ)
