Regardless of the "era" a story is set in there is absolutely no justification or excuse for kidnapping/rape/sexual assault/violence/abuse/torture and the list goes on...and going to the whole hierarchy thing there are many MANY stories that use that time frame/setting and are beautifully executed... potn is bad just execution and the I hate how the author relies on pure abuse and violence as a plot driver....its like "oh the plot needs to move forward but wait gotta make sure nakyum is miserable" like seriously WTF (︶︿︶)=凸

... alright then. People used to think keeping slaves was fine. Even the kindest people would have a few slaves around as servants. Ancient China also used to marry cousins with cousins... In ancient Korea... commoners were quite literally lower than dirt, it was legal to kill them without repercussions. That's not to say everyone kept slaves, or everyone married their cousins, or that everyone killed commoners. Just that the 'era' made it so that those things were commonplace--and for a very long time, no one did anything to stop such. It was normal. Sure, you may have seen many Ancient setting stories wherein there are no such events, where the horrible things are avoided. It's merely a matter of what elements the author in question keeps in and what is decidedly kept out. It's not a 'justification', it's merely the way life was back then. It just is.
