I'm not sure why everybody is complaining that we know nothing about the characters. Kaji doesn't speak exactly what's on his mind but the author DOES shows his backstory & motivations, if you paid attention you would've caught the implications of what he says/does.
We know from how Kaji acts that he's estranged from his mother. His uncle tries to get him to reconcile with her and says that she was going through a "tough time" when she gave birth to Kaji and hence he had to go through "tough times" with her too. So what exactly happened? Sensei tells Midori that he "hated neckties' when he went to school because he "didn't like the feeling of something tightening around his neck" which suggests that his mother tried to strangle/murder him as a kid. Yeah. Or alternatively it could be an abusive father him and his mother escaped from, but either way it does suggest he was strangled/choked either in a murder attempt or as a punishment. I'm actually glad they didn't have him forgive his mum because he doesn't have to do so, but i'm glad he does get along better with his sister because she's an innocent party in all that shit.
Also, yes, Kobayakawa was the one who sent him the fan letter in his early magazine works. In the one-shot prequel in Inu Koi, it's implied he suspected from the beginning that Kobayakawa was the one who sent him the letter bc he kept complimenting his name lol. Only in the 3rd volume did he actually confirm it though since he noticed the same magazine in Midori's parents' house. In the same volume, Kaji also implies he fell for Midori because of his passion for books. Since he was a kid, Midori has been reading, even sending fan letters to obscure unknown authors in magazines, and when they first met he got wet in the rain to protect Kaji's book. Kaji even says that it's okay if Midori quits being his editor but don't quit being an editor as his career because he knows how much Midori genuinely loves books.
Too bad Midori didn't catch what Kaji said about the letter because his mind was blank from getting railed LMAOOO
