That bugs me too when it seems pointless. I can only say I guess it maybe makes sense in this that they can hide their animal part so they would need the other ears. I tell myself evolution hasn’t fully kicked in yet or the animal years make it easier to hear further and clearer than their human ones.
One thing as a personal opinion from someone who draws too:
It might be because it’ll look weirder if the human ears are missing (at least in my eyes). Without the human ears normally there it looks odd for there to be a blank space and whenever I try to fill the space with hair I overdo it and it’ll look like some alien.
I prefer this than another style that I saw, which was the artist/author drew the character’s animal ears where their human ears would be- instead of on top of their head. It bothered me more than this because every character looked like a monkey lmao
