i might be confused but i think the author is gay. i think he did double suicide with another boy, and then Reiji's mom saved him.

Sorry, it's's been a while since I read this, so it might be a little blurry....from what I remember, it is...

1) There is weird tension between the author and mother when he returns reiji's bike. She goes on later to say he is a bad man and not to trust him.
2) The author has never touched Naji nor seen any interest in her.
3) Both the author and the mom talk about committing the double suicide with their lover. In both of their stories, the lover is the one who dies.
4) Reiji researches in the library about the double suicide, and it comes up that the one who died was male.
3) The author never identifies the gender of the lover who dies to Chako; he uses "they died," while the mother says it was her bf who dies. She also notes that the author is too much of a coward to try suicide.

So, there are still some unclear things about the double suicide. There are 3 ppl involved. The Mother, author, and dead male lover. The author was either in love or was a secret lover to the male who died. Maybe the author tried to save the male lover during the double suicide, but failed and saved the mother instead. Maybe the 3 of them tried to all commit suicide. IDK, but I think that the author is gay.

As for the bff, the way he is so possessive of reiji and the fact he keeps all the cig packets that reiji buys makes me think he has an unhealthy obsession with him.
