If you take it out of context, ryou's actually quite a detestable person from what he's done in the past. But the mangaka really wrote him out into such a way that you feel conflicted to outright hate him. His personality and actions aren't without depth and its so human that it made me think about someone out there that might be exactly like him struggling though all that. His decisions weren't the best but nor were the people around him at the time. He was essentially an abandoned child that had truly gotten lost as he grew and had lost himself somewhere along the road.
