Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a dissociative disorder caused by extreme trauma typically staring before the age of five. People with DID have different personality states called “alters” (accompanied by related alterations in affect, behavior, consciousness, memory, perception, cognition, and/or sensory-motor functioning). People with DID experience complete amnesia when different alters are out.
