It can be a long or a short seperation, and in the series the reunion might be a huge part of the series or not. 

Love it when the two characters develop in the time spent apart, that when they meet again, there is a change in them both (love the tension)

Just to clarify, not all series are sad or the reason for falling out is bad, they are sometimes lighthearted.
