In many stories the partner is well aware of his 'role' (the role put upon e.g. by society due to discrimination or forced into the situation due to money problems) causing a change in his behaviour or personality (e.g. inferiority complex).
Other stories portray the relationship between the boss and his employee. This already implies a hierarchic structure.
