Mc saw his friends die in front of him and becoming zombie, leading to a trauma.
After being sent to war as a child and witnessing all kind of horror, Ml ends up with a split personality.
The trauma makes him unable to remember some moments of his life (moments in which his other personality which is crazy and ruthless comes out to protect him)

Ml here is very complex, with a terrible past.
I won't develop since it would spoil an important part of the plot, but both Mc and Ml have a kind of trauma.

Both Mc and Ml have a lot of issues, because of past trauma
Mc : Bullying / Humiliation / Assault
Ml : SA on a child / Neglect from his dad / Abuse
Ml AND fl both have a real traumatic past that we are only starting to discover (around chap 120).
The story has a slow pace, and the characters are sometimes not likable, but I feel like we are really going to understand them better seeing their past.
